Clinical Cancer Research in Switzerland Under Pressure
Clinical trials give patients access to new treatments and are a key foundation for medical progress. At the same time, it is crucial that research continue to take place in Europe. “Study results from China cannot simply be applied to the European population,” explains Prof. Sacha Rothschild, an oncologist at the Baden Cantonal Hospital and vice president of the Swiss Cancer Institute, in the article.
A key challenge is the regulatory framework for clinical trials in Switzerland. Lengthy approval processes make it difficult to conduct these trials and undermine the country’s international competitiveness. “We’ve fallen behind,” says Vincent Gruntz, CEO of the Swiss Cancer Institute.

As a national center of excellence for independent clinical cancer research, the Swiss Cancer Institute, together with its 23 member centers, conducts clinical trials throughout Switzerland. Favorable conditions are essential to ensure that innovative research can continue to take place here in the future and benefit patients.
