Between Life Extension and Quality of Life: Decisions of Patients with Non-Metastatic Gastric and Esophageal Cancer

What is this study about?

Patients with non-metastatic gastric or esophageal cancer face difficult treatment decisions – some therapies may extend life, while others focus more on improving quality of life. These choices are often challenging. In addition, it is not yet known whether patients’ views change over the course of treatment.

What does the study aim to find out?

  • Do patients’ preferences regarding quality of life versus life extension change during treatment?

  • Do physicians truly know what their patients want?

How does the study work?

Patients and their physicians each complete three questionnaires:

  1. After the first treatment discussion

  2. During treatment

  3. Six months later

Why is this important?

This is the first study of its kind. It can help improve communication between doctors and patients, ensuring that patients feel well informed and confident in making the right decisions for themselves.
